Testing Your outdoor Air Quality
Get real time air quality data where you live for FREE.
Purchase a Purple air sensor for hyper local air quality information and to help support NASA’s crowdfunding efforts to track outdoor air quality. If you don’t want to buy your own sensor, the Airnow.gov app gives you information from the Purple sensor closest to you.
Testing your indoor air quality
Wirecutter from the New York Times loves this indoor air quality monitor. It’s a Battery Powered Radon & Air Quality Monitor (meaning it tracks PM, CO2, VOC, Humidity, Temperature and Pressure).
Wirecutter’s second and less expensive choice. SAF Aranet4 Home: Wireless Indoor Air Quality Monitor (measures CO2, Temperature, Humidity and More) Portable, Battery Powered.
Air Purifiers
There is nothing on this list that is more important than an air purifier. There is a very wide range of options out there and an even wider range of prices. I can tell you that we picked ours up at the Rack. Yes, that Rack. They are still going strong after a few years. I’ve linked to the same models below. We turn them on every night, so they get lots of action. We also picked up a smaller purifier at Ikea to use in our son’s room. It didn’t fare as well. I’m including this fancy Dyson option because who doesn’t love Dyson right now and this is a super steal.
Either way, just get what is reasonable for your budget and see how it goes.
Self Cleaning Litterbox
We purchased two of these for Christmas 2020 and they’ve help prevent the house from having a strong cat smell. There are zillions of self cleaning litter box options. Most of them are much more expensive than this one. Although, while the price is lower for this box, the crystals are pricey and are necessary rather than traditional litter. The crystals to help prevent odor.
I researched to give you some other options and the good people at the NYT Wirecutter don’t think you should get a self cleaning box at all. So, it’s your call. I can say it’s been great for us.
Top 10 Air Purifying House Plants
We love plants and this list makes you want to go buy some….
HEPA Filters
HEPA filters are the key to making sure your air is being filtered properly. You’ll replace filters in your air purifiers, your furnace, your vacuum and your Roomba, if you have one. Of course, you’ll want to be sure to find the proper model and size HEPA filter for your appliances to make sure everything goes smoothly. Keep things simple by putting a recurring appointment on your calendar to replace filters around the house. You’ll notice a big difference when you do. You may prefer a recurring purchase on Amazon that will nudge you when it’s time to replace your filters. Make sure you have extras on hand for the smoky season or any other times that your air quality may suffer and/or if you’ll have a crowd at your place. HEPA filters help prevent the spread of viruses.
OTHER Filters
Most air purifiers have two types of filters. They have HEPA filters and coarser filters help filter out odors and pet hair. You’ll replace these more often than the HEPA filters.
