October, 2024 Momentum Wishlist

Intentional Shopping

Okay ladies! It’s time for the October Wishlist. This month, we’re focusing on buying with intention. Starting with the Poplin System, shopping can be a joyful, decisive experience. Even better, you’ll save time, heartache and money. Yes! There are times when you’ll save cash by shopping pieces on sale, second hand or from discount retailers. But you also save cash when you buy full price items because keeping and wearing an item makes the price per wear much lower than staring at it with all the tags in your closet:) This month, I’ve put together a few collections based on request from members in the chat. I can’t wait to share. And remember, while we are focused on specific requests, ideally, you’ll find lessons here and pieces that speak to you, too! Off we go!

Fist up, Laura!

Laura: Modern Classic, Luxurious, Feminine, Fun

Diamond, Winter

Tropical family vacation, ideally Native American designers or brands

I started things off with my absolute favorite Native American designer, B. Yellowtail. Her pieces are gorgeous and she makes a point of letting folks know that they are for everyone, so no need to worry about appropriation. Smaller designers and shops won’t have many options for filtering. So, you’ll need to scroll through. In this case, I was looking for silhouettes that flatter a diamond shape and items in her color palette. I knew that finding something for a tropical vacation might be a reach here, based on her typical collections, but I was elated to find this skirt and a few other items that will be available soon. From there, I looked for other items that would complete the look.

Specifically, I wanted a bathing suit or bathing suit top to pair with the skirt to give it more of a vacation vibe. Ru La La is a favorite site for discount designer pieces. After filtering for size, I selected only pink bathing suits in search of the proper shade and cut.

Laura’s style is modern and architectural- it has a bit of an edge and I didn’t want this skirt to make the entire look feel too boho for her authentic personal style. That’s when I went to the United Nude sale section in search of the Mobius. After all, it brings the right edge to the look and since we’re in fall, the likelihood that a sandal would be on sale was high. Done and done.

B.YELLOWTAIL Pleated Midi Skirt. B.Yellowtail. $139. Native American Designer who is also giving back.

Jenny K.: Art Gallery Owner

Hourglass, Autumn

Casual options for the weekend

Jenny’s Art Gallery Owner vibe (I coined that phrase upon seeing her collection of clothing and art) is just right for unusual pieces that show confidence and have a one of a kind vibe. She also has the confidence to try new things. The tricky part is that because her style is put together, casual outfits can feel sloppy or underwhelming for her, so this was all about finding the right balance. Designer items often work well for her because she also has a luxurious vibe. I started with Far Fetch, another great site for discount designer pieces. I filtered for item, size, color and price. Things can get pretty crazy over there. I found this sweatshirt that is everything! Although, in an effort to not overwhelm her frame, it will likely need tailoring. Even so, it’s got a confident, effortless vibe that will work very well for the weekend. She can pair it with sneakers, boots, sandals or heels, depending on the style goals.

A lug boot seemed like a no brainer here. Again, Far Fetch had some stellar choices and this one balances the voluminous sweatshirt and is super practical for the weekends in the Seattle rain without sacrificing her style.

Staud is a favorite for both of us and this skirt shows off her shape and makes a big impression. I wanted to find Staud on sale so I googled Staud Sale to get some ideas. I didn’t love what I saw, so I went to the Staud site (no sale), then back to Ru La La. Success!

Handbags are a big way that Jenny communicates her style and I figured the best way to make her outfit feel more casual is to go for a practical, casual bag. Free People’s sling bag came to mind. It’s reasonably priced, has a cross body option and feels more casual and relaxed. Plus, it’s available in multiple colors.

Ioana Ciolacu Sonia sweatshirt. Available in multiple colors. Far Fetch. $212.

Staud Lorraine Skirt. RuLaLa. Was: $185. Now: $41.

AGL AGL Malika knee-length boots. FarFetch. Was: $470. Now: $352.

Lenora: Classic, Vintage, Luxury

Triangle, Winter

Petite casual tops for camera/ Zoom meetings. Especially jewel tones and specifically green.

Lenora needs tops for Zoom meetings so I figured that giving her more options on top was more useful than an entire outfit. I’m loving green for her and knew that finding tops that are both flattering and actually available in petite was a must. I also wanted to find some great sales. I started with visits to a few favorite petite sites and was disappointed with my findings. Then, I tried a google search for petite green top. Why not? That took me to Macy’s, a great destination that often comes through. Frankly, the in person shopping experience isn’t ideal. So, it’s easy for folks to forget that Macy’s exists at all, but for petites, it’s worth some research. Once on the site, I filtered for color, size and petite. Because the selection is limited, I didn’t need to go much further.

I also tried a google search for petite green leather jacket because it feels like a great way for Lenora to dress up any outfit. Ann Taylor has a lot of not awesome things AND I often find a few gems there, especially in petite sizes. This was a major win.

Lastly, I know that J.Crew and Banana Republic carry petite. That means that the factory or outlet version of each will likely also have some great sale items. And indeed, J Crew factory came in for the win.

Petite V-neck clip-dot blouse. Factory JCrew. Available in multiple colors. Was: $79. Now: $29.

Petite Sam & JessPetite V-Neck Smocked-Shoulder Blouse. Available in multiple colors. Macy’s. Was: $59. Now: $35.

Petite Faux leather jacket. Ann Taylor. Was: $198. Now: $118.

Petite Stretch Cotton Boatneck Tee. Macy’s. $49.

Cheryl: Warm, Effortless, Fierce

Inverted Triangle, Spring

Business casual or casual options for going out

Rounding out our list, we’ve got an outfit for Cheryl. I know she needs pieces to feel functional and comfortable, or she won’t wear them. And, living in Colorado, we need items that are going to work as the weather changes. As an inverted triangle, the goal is to draw the eye down, but in my effort to up her style game, I really wanted a fun leather or vegan leather jacket in green. Ideally, this jacket would be streamlined without shoulder details. However, I wanted to keep the price reasonable, especially as I’m pushing her out of her comfort zone, so a vegan leather choice makes more sense.

My first choice for leather or vegan leather jackets is always Nordstrom Rack online, so I started there. Filtering to leather and faux leather jackets, then by size and color, I was thrilled to find this choice from Levis. I checked several other sites, did some google searches, etc, and was confident this was my favorite. Then, I needed to balance her lower half.

All Saints is a great way to introduce fierceness into her look in a way that she’ll wear- so I checked out All Saints sale pieces on the All Saints site, Nordstrom Rack, Nordstrom and with a google search. The All Saints site had the best prices on the same items that were available at the other stores. I love this sweater because it draws the eye down to balance her frame and has an effortless, edgy vibe. It’s also great with the jacket and has a warmth or softness that aligns with her style.

I knew that a bulky boot was essential to balance her shape. And again, All Saints was my first thought. I checked all the previous locations for options and filtered by size and shoe type.

Lastly, this outfit is going to become a go-to with a midi or maxi flowy skirt. That means she can layer wool tights underneath, balance her shape, not feel overdressed AND have an effortless, warm vibe.

Faux Leather Fashion Belted Moto Jacket. Nordstrom Rack. Was: $180. Now: $59-69.

By Anthropologie Drop-Waist Midi Skirt. Anthro. $138.

All Saints Lock Crew Neck Asymmetric Sweater. Available in multiple colors. All Saints. Was: $279. Now: $133.

All Saints Harlee Lug Sole Chelsea Boot. Nordstrom Rack. Was: $379. Now: $159.

Reaction Kenneth Cole Anabelle Boot. Nordstrom Rack. Was: $129. Now: $49.

And there you have it! I can’t wait to hear what you think. Clients typically receive wishlists just like this. Last month, I experimented with video explanations of the items on the wishlist. What do you prefer? I’m flexible!
