Draw attention with: lighter/ brighter colors, prints, texture, skin.

Minimize attention with: darker colors, stiffer fabrics.

TOPS

Go for visual interest on top with vibrant shades, lighter hues and high contrast patterns above your natural waistline.

  • Boat or wide-neck styles

  • Plunging necklines

  • Three quarter length sleeves

  • Bold shoulders or shoulder details

  • Tops with embellishments or ruffles, especially near the shoulders, neckline or bust.

  • Flutter, princess, cap or puff sleeves.

  • Tops with built in volume, especially at the bust or neckline.

  • Tie neck blouses (also known as pussy bows) , asymmetrical (like a v-neck but at an angle rather than 90 degrees) and high necklines

  • Horizontal stripes

  • Cowl neck or shawl collars

  • Batwing sleeves

  • Tops that are gathered at the waistline (not the hips)

Avoid:

  • Tops that are dark, form-fitting and uninteresting paired with a bold bottom.

To maximize the bust line:

  • bright and light tops

  • horizontal stripes and prints

  • asymmetrical tops

  • ruffled and pleated blouses

  • details at the bust

  • low cut necklines

To minimize the bust line:

  • Vertical or diagonal stripes or details

  • Solid tops in neutral or deep colors

  • Wrap styles and tailored options with darts

  • Deep shawl collars

  • Try tops with a hidden closure inside to avoid gaping (buttons, velcro, etc.)

  • Opt for structured tops with extra stretch to offer more room at the bust.

  • Avoid shiny fabrics

PANTS

Accentuate your hips and show off your curves with well tailored pieces.

  • Flat front bootcut pants

  • Tailored pants with a wide leg/ sailor pants

  • Slightly flared yoga pants (if and only if you are going to yoga.)

  • Culottes or palazzo pants.

  • High waisted pants.

  • Darker colors, less contrast.

  • Wool or denim hold their shape and aren't too clingy.

  • Bootcut, straight leg, wide leg jeans.

Avoid:

  • Pleats, side pockets or anything that adds volume to hips.

  • Pants that are not well tailored or have a poor fit.

  • Pants with wide belts in a contrasting color, unless they are high rise pants with the belt hitting at your smallest point.

  • Fabrics that are too clingy such as jersey.

  • Baggy pants or anything that is not tailored to fit you.

SKIRTS

Accentuate your hips while keeping everything in proportion. Remember, the goal is to balance your frame.

  • Knee length A-line skirt

  • Full or flat front, A-line high

  • Maxi skirt.

  • Hemlines just above the knee to just below the knee are most flattering.

  • Pencil skirts.

  • Darker colors, less contrast

Avoid:

  • Bubble skirts

  • pleated skirts

  • voluminous skirts

  • anything that adds volume to your lower, dominant half.

DRESSES / Jumpsuits

Flirty, feminine dresses look best on you as they flatter your frame.

  • Halter neck

  • Empire waistline

  • Off the shoulder

  • Strapless

  • Fit and flare (a line on bottom)

  • Ruffles, frills, design elements on top

  • Trapeze dresses

  • Boatneck or wide neck, especially with an a-line skirt

  • Tailored cuts

  • Belted options that belt at your smallest point

  • Jumpsuits that draw the eye to your top half

  • Wide leg jumpsuits with details at the shoulders or bust, an open neckline, deep v or low back

  • Sleeveless, off the shoulder, one shoulder choices

  • Rompers with voluminous sleeves, an open neckline or other features that balance your frame

Avoid:

  • Drop waist dresses (those with a drawstring or seam that runs across your widest part) which draw attention to the widest part of your body.

  • Pleats at the waistline on jumpsuits and dresses that add bulk unnecessarily.

  • Tunics that cling to your stomach or hips are not a win. Otherwise, tunics can work well. The goal is for your tunic to stop just below your widest part, rather than at that part.

  • Avoid jumpsuits that draw the eye to your lower half and minimize the top.

To minimize the bust line:

  • Solid top portion of the dress in neutral or deep colors

  • Vertical or diagonal stripes or details

  • Wrap styles and tailored options with darts

  • Deep shawl collars

  • Vertical patterns or monochromatic to elongate

To maximize the bust line:

  • Bright and light colors on top

  • Horizontal stripes and prints

  • Asymmetrical neckline

  • Ruffled and pleated on top

  • Details at the bust

  • Boat, crew, high and low cut necklines

JACKETS

Jackets that draw attention to your top half thanks to cut, color, texture or other visual interest.

  • Bold shoulders or shoulder details

  • High contrast colors and prints

  • Tailored blazers in textured, bright or light colors

  • Statement necklines, fur collars or contrast colors

  • Jacket worn solo

  • Belted jackets and coats that show your small waistline

  • Short jackets or cardigans can be worn with empire waist dresses to draw attention to your rib cage rather than your stomach.

  • Deep plunging necklines.

  • Prints, textures, light or bright colored options.

  • Longer jackets (below hips).

  • Jackets with contrast sleeves.

  • Boxy jackets

  • Jackets with lots of detail

Avoid:

  • Dark uneventful jackets that send the eye to your bottom in search of a focal point.

  • Jackets that end right at your hips- your widest part.

To minimize the bust line:

  • Solid jackets in neutral or deep colors

  • Vertical or diagonal stripes or details

  • Wrap styles and tailored jackets with darts

  • Deep shawl collars

SHOES

Opt for neutral shoes that do not visually weigh down your figure unnecessarily.

  • Narrow, pointed or sleek flats

  • Wedges.

  • Nude shoes.

  • Shoes that are the same color as your skirt or pants.

  • When going for a bold shoe, simply use Style Math. If your eye-catching shoes are making your bottom half a +3, be sure to take extra care to draw the eye up with a more attention-getting top half (2) and a minimizing skirt or pair of pants (-1) so your equation is now 2 on top and 2 on the bottom.

Avoid:

  • Heavy shoes with overly rounded toes, square toes or shoes that create a boxy effect overall.

ACCESSORIES

Choose pieces that elevate your style while drawing attention to your top half to balance out your frame.

  • Handbags that hit at your chest or carry larger bags to hit at your knees.

  • Scarves, especially bold colors or prints close to your face.

  • Statement necklaces or earrings to draw attention to your top half.

  • Belts for high waisted skirts or pants or over jackets are great.

Avoid: Wide belts with pants in a contrasting color, drawing attention to your widest part. Large handbags that hit at your hips.
